Here are sketches and preliminary thumbnails that I did during the production of Tangled. I always find interesting to see other animator´s thinking process and thumbnails so I figured that might be interesting to share this.

This one has included a self-caricature of me on my normal work pose. And also a caricature of director Byron Howard, who introduced a new form of applause to our team , the" snap-plause" used only when the shot is NEARLY approved but not fully approved.

Here are some explorations for a shot in the Thug pub scene, and also some random characters.

This page includes a caricature of Chad Sellers ( down)

Some explorations for a pose for Flynn, also on the left a bad caricature of director Nathan Greno , and a sketch of a girl based on Penny from "the big bang theory"( I know , it has nothing to do...my sketchbook is really unorganized..!)

Here I was learning how to do a braid, using the internet as a source of information.

Some ideas on the trajectory to be used for the scene where four little girls braid Rapunzel´s hair.

These stick figure thumbnails are very helpful for planning complicated actions, this is a moment where Flynn is scared of Maximus , who tries to catch him.

We were invited to this lunch party at a friends house, and the daughter of one of the guys there inspired this quick sketch on my iphone. She had this great long golden hair, just like our character on the movie. Or maybe is just me that I see Rapunzels everywhere I go...!

Nos invitaron a comer en casa de un colega, y la niña de uno de los invitados me inspiro para hacer este bocetillo rapido en el iphone. Me recordó un montón a rapunzel , por el pelo largo rubio que tenia. También influyen las horas de curro y que ya veo "Rapunzeles" por todos lados .... !!!

First Days at Disney!!

This are some pics from my first days here at Disney. It has been all orientation tours and speeches about the company´s policies and all. A lot of information to take in one go, really tiring!! This is an amazing place to work, I love how nice is everyone and the sense of teamwork on all the departments. Rapunzel looks absolutelly stunning, I think is going to be a huge hit. I´ve met great artists like Glen Keane and John Kars, witch is an honour, and I can´t believe that they´re gonna be my bosses !!
I can´t wait to get started animating.

Estas son algunas fotos de mis primeros días aquí en Disney. Han sido dos dias de tours de orientación y discursos sobre las políticas de la empresa y demas. Una gran cantidad de información para asimilar de una vez,ha sido realmente agotador! Este es un lugar increible para trabajar, me encanta lo agradable que es todo el mundo y el sentido de trabajo en equipo en todos los departamentos. Rapunzel tiene una pinta impresionante, creo que va a ser un gran éxito. He conocido a grandes artistas como Glen Keane y John Kars, lo cual ha sido todo un honor, es flipante que estos van a ser mis jefes!!

It´s official !!

Next November 30th I will start at The Walt Disney Pictures studio , as part of the animation team of Rapunzel.

It has been years and years of hard work , trying to get to work on the US on a big animated film, and after lots of negatives and false hopes , it finally arrived, and I couldn´t be happier with the opportunity.

I will post photos, and comments about my journey to Los Angeles , and the first impressions.

Ya es oficial! Próximo 30 de noviembre voy a empezar en el estudio de Walt Disney Pictures, como parte del equipo de animación de Rapunzel.

I can´t stop doing this paintings!! I´m getting the hang of Sketchbook pro , plus Photoshop on the Cintiq . I created some custom brushes that really work for me and I feel really confortable with them. This is a portrait of my girl , ( again!) this time giving a different more "cute" and volumetric approach. Comments are welcome!

Estoy viciandome a dibujar estos retratos!! , cada vez intento librarme mas de la linea de contorno y optar por una ilustración mas volumétrica. Le he pillado el truquillo ya al Sketchbook pro , junto con el Photoshop en la Cintiq. Tengo creados unos pinceles personalizados que me funcionan muy bien. Los comentarios son bienvenidos!

I´m so excited with the Cintiq!! My friend Pedro Daniel reccomended me Sketchbook Pro for drawing , and WOW is just an amazing software, it feels really natural drawing on this and the amount of configuration for the brushes is just great!.

Estoy flipado con la Cintiq! , Mi colega Pedro Daniel me ha recomendado el Sketchbook Pro para dibujar , y la verdad es que va de puta madre. Te pilla el trazo de forma muy natural, y tiene mogollon de configuraciones distintas para los pinceles.

Ok, This is slowly coming together I have inked The Fairy using my
brand new Cintiq. Now is Time to finish inking the background
and foreground elements, and then putting some colors in.. I
changed the wings a bit to give them a more organic look.

OK poquito a poco esto ya va cojiendo forma he terminado de
entintar la hada, estrenando mi nueva y flamante Cintiq.Ahora
me queda terminar de poner la línea a el fondo y empezar a dar
color...
He cambiado las alas un poco para darle Un aspecto más orgánico.

I left this one waiting for long time, now I have some time. I added foilage an some more detail , still thinking about how is this going to look. I did a small thumbnail on the iphone for the general feel of the colors, but I need to do a more definite version of that.

He tenido que dejar esta ilustracion de lado mucho tiempo, pero ahora tengo ya por fin algo de tiempo asi que me he puesto a ello. He empezado a poner detalle de la vegetacion del fondo y demás , me falta aun entintar a la hadita. Aun no tengo muy claro como va a quedar esto , pero bueno el otro dia hize un pequeño boceto de color con el iphone, y creo que ira por ahi el asunto aunque falta detallar todo un poco mas.

I´m doing this ilustration for my girlfriend´s blog and I have this
first rough witch is in fact her posing .I´m thinking about ginving it an Alfons Mucha style,
with lots of vegetation patterns and decoration. I will keep posting
the process as I go.
He comenzado esta ilustración para el blog " Un rincón en la noche ".He empezado con el boceto que es ni mas ni menos que Érika posando.
Estoy planeando darle un estilo modernista como un cuadro de Alfons
Mucha, con mucho motivo vegetal y mucha decoración. Iré posteando el
paso a paso segun lo voy haciendo.

Here is a caricature of the people in our room. We are 40 animators,
but divided in different rooms o 6-7 people.I our room we are 8 and 2
animators were living today so I decided to create this image as a
souvenir so we can all remember the times were we worked in this crazy
alien movie!!
I really wanted to do the people as if they where inhabitants of
"Planet 51", but it was quite a challenge!. It´s been really hard to
keep the likeness of the caricature without drawing the nose , and
transforming the hair into some sort of tentacle/rubber.

Esta es una caricatura del grupo de animadores de nuestra sala. Somos
40 animadores pero estamos divididos en salas de 6 o 7 . En nuestra
sala somos 8 , y hoy se iban 2 a sus respectivos paises. Asi que
decidí hacer este dibujo para que se lo llevaran de recuerdo de lo que
fue trabajar en esta peli.
Mi ambición era hacer la caricatura de la gente pero como si fueran
habitantes de "Planet 51" , es decir, sin nariz, verdes, con antenas y
sin pantalones!!. La verdad es que fue todo un reto, es bastante
dificil que se parezca la gente si le quitas la nariz, pero bueno , al
final ha quedado resultón y la gente se quedó encantada.

Using an app called "brushes" is really simple but it works great for quick color sketches.

"La Pequeña Elfa", o tambien conocida como "Dulce Selene" estrena blog de relatos oscuros y tenebrosos en el cual estaré yo participando como ilustrador.Para mi sera un gran reto , adaptarme a un estilo más oscuro y adulto de lo que estoy acostumbrado a hacer, pero los retos me gustan..! de hecho me animan a dibujar mas en mis ratos libres.

Cartoon wedding

These guys really loved "Lilo and Stitch", so as a wedding present I
did this picture. I wanted to give a real feeling of them being inside
de movie , so I tried to emulate the graphical feel of watercolor
background vs clean line and flat color characters. I tried also to
get the same style of caricature for their faces.
I created this entirely on the computer , no paper/scanning. I did the
rough characters in Photoshop then I cleaned the lines on Flash. The
background I decided to keep it rough on Ps, ( also I didn´t have much
time to go into more detail!)

Unos colegas se casaban y como son fans de "Lilo y Stitch" decidi
crear esta imagen para regalo de boda, como si ellos estuvieran
dentro de la peli y Stitch les estuviera casando. Intenté emular el
estilo de acuarela de los fondos de la peli en contraste con los
personajes que tienen colores planos, linea limpia y una paleta
tirando a cálida. La imagen esta hecha completamente digital, sin
dibujar primero en el papel y luego escaneando. Solo con la wacom ,
hize el boceto en sucio de los personajes y luego en el Flash pase a
limpio la linea, para que quedara suave y limpita. Luego el fondo esta
hecho en plan rapido con Photoshop, usando pinceles gordos y con poca
opacidad. ( ademas tampoco tenia mucho tiempo de hacer un fondo muy
detallado!)
